Every year I return to Pawley’s Island, SC. It’s a way of hitting the re-set button and gaining a fresh perspective. I love the marsh and the ocean equally. But nothing beats the sky. I loved watching clouds as a kid—remember long road trips with nothing else to do? A sense of peace comes over me when I watch clouds. There’s something about the expansiveness of the sky, feeling small, and recognizing how small our problems are in the grand scheme of things. You can feel yourself letting go. Clouds are never static and so I photograph them obsessively. For this painting I wanted a wide scale to convey that moment of facing the dunes and taking in the skies above. People have told me that my art uplifts their spirits. I can’t think of a better compliment. Creating art certainly lifts my spirits. Perhaps some of that magic finds its way into the paint.
