Clouds Over Ocmulgee
by M.F.G. BURT
The first time I visited the Great Mound at Ocmulgee National Park, I was on a school field trip. I remember climbing the stairs – and protesting at the number of them – and being completely stunned by the view. Now I live in Macon and I climb those stairs willingly several times a year just to feel like I’m standing in the sky.
Obsessed with clouds as I am, and as much as I draw and paint them, I accept that images appear in them unbidden. Sometimes I consider them a distraction from a composition and I work the painting until they’re gone, but with this one, I decided to let them remain. With the site’s history of indigenous people and their connection to the natural and supernatural world, it seems appropriate that the shapes of two animals, one mythical and one real, would appear. See if you can find them.
