Isn’t a still life of fruit just a picture of fruit? Not if you believe that everything an artist makes, in some way, is a self-portrait. And how in the world can an image of a pear and an apple be anything more than a pear and an apple? I will attempt to explain. When I sit down to create a still life, of course I selected from whatever is around. Rummaging through the fridge, I emerged with two pieces of fruit. Trust me, I thought I was just drawing a pear and an apple. But look at how they are arranged. You can tell they like each other. They even look like a couple. That’s when I realized I had drawn my husband and myself. Pears are my favorite fruit so of course they stay on the grocery list and of course I grabbed a pear first. Jim believes apples are the perfect food, which is just crazy. Everybody knows that BBQ ribs are the perfect food.
