Tell Them It Was Me
by M.F.G. BURT
"Tell Them It Was Me" is a portrait of Stacey Abrams, previously a candidate for Governor of Georgia, the first woman to lead either party in the Georgia General Assembly, and the first African American to lead the House of Representatives. She is a committed leader for voting rights, particularly in a state where systemic racism and disenfranchisement continues. Between 2014 and 2016, Abrams' New Georgia Project registered more than 200,000 voters. This collage is made entirely of mail received by the artist leading up to the 2020 elections in which Abrams' impact was apparent as Georgia made history in both national and state elections. Mail from all political parties was used in the work's composition, along with mailed information on how to vote during a pandemic. This is a one-of-a-kind piece, primarily because the materials that compose it are already scarce.
