Republic
by M.F.G. BURT
I grew up thinking America was the best of everything. As a young adult my eyes were peeled open and I began to see America as she really is. I believe in the individual who works to make things better for others, but my faith in this Republic falters. Making this piece was a necessary expression of grief, and as I worked, I could feel my resolve to not give up, ever. Composed of 100% postconsumer paper and paint, the art was made by mixing paper pulp with paint and then pouring it. Highly textured and sealed, it can be experienced by touch.
